But apparently, the Coens aren't biting on bringing back the nimbly flamboyant trash-talking bowler any time soon. In fact, Turturro has been pleading with them to bring back another one of his characters, Jesus Quintana from The Big Lebowski for a spinoff. He’s getting there." So how old do they want their muse to be exactly? Here we are in 2023 and Turturro, the 66-year-old man who has collaborated with the directors no less than four times, isn't getting any younger, and while entertaining, Barton Fink is not one of their most memorable characters in the way that McDunnough, Lebowski, Marge Gunderson, and Anton Chigurh are. In a 2016 interview with Variety, the brothers made the surprising admission about bringing back Turturro's character for another run with Ethan saying, "We’re going to do a 'Barton Fink' sequel at some point." And brother, Joel added, "That’s the one movie that we thought deserved a sequel, called 'Old Fink.' But we don’t want to do it until Turturro is quite old. So what is different about Barton Fink, and who is flaming their cigarette lighter for more of him? McDunnough is up to these days or exactly what kind of misadventures Jeff "The Dude" Lebowski has stumbled into, we shudder to think of a reprisal somehow tarnishing their cinematic legacies. And they're chock-full of characters who were never meant to make encores. They are allegories doused with irony, parables unique unto themselves each earmarked for a particular time and space. They tell a story from beginning to middle to end. The biggest reason the Coens never make sequels is that they rarely allow for loose ends. It's a beautiful film marked by a masterful screenplay and the deft performances of Turturro, Goodman, Tony Shaloub, and Judy Davis. Fink is a quiet, meticulous man by nature, who takes great pride in the art of expression through writing (He feels very much like a noirish send-up by the Coens of the misdirected idolization of writers.) So when he is struck with a crippling case of writer's block as he unpacks his bags in sunny Hollywood and runs into a series of mysterious, Coen-esque oddballs and eccentrics that stay in the Earle Hotel, he enters into disillusionment and a full-blown existential crisis.

The first lesson: “Don’t drink sea water.”Įver since, Gendry has been rowing, rowing, rowing, perhaps all the way to Pentos. Luckily, Davos Seaworth was there to offer some helpful advice to the city boy. Now Robert's son and Ned's son - plus Jorah Mormont, Tormund Giantsbane, and several other free men - are back from a trip North of the Wall where they captured a White Walker to prove to Cersei that there is a credible (and terrifying) threat marching on them, but Cersei might have other plans that could get in the way of a possible Gendry and Arya reunion. The last time we saw Gendry on Game of Thrones, he was in a tiny rowboat with some bread and water, attempting to head south toward King’s Landing. (Yes, we all know Jon Snow isn't really a bastard, but they don't know that yet.) So Gendry is back, and while we don't think he's going to end up as a ruler of the Seven Kingdoms (but who knows, really?), it's been wonderful to see him and Jon Snow bond over being the bastard sons of two noblemen who were best friends. Ser Davos, however, thinks Melisandre's magic is nonsense and doesn't believe in sacrificing an innocent boy, so he smuggles Gendry out of Dragonstone and sends him off into the sea, rowing for King's Landing - which is why Davos's greets Gendry with "Thought you might still be rowing!" when he finds him in season seven, a delightful wink and nod to the fans, since the last time anyone saw Gendry on the show was when he was rowing out into the sea. She believes Stannis Baratheon needs a blood sacrifice of someone with king's blood in order to win the War of the Five Kings, so she takes Gendry back to Dragonstone and seduces him in order to prove his blood magic to Stannis, because leeches (containing Gendry's blood) that represent Joffrey, Balon Greyjoy, and Robb Stark are thrown into the fire and Robb Stark dies at the Red Wedding shortly thereafter. Seriously, would you trust a bunch of guys who sold you out to be sacrificed to the Lord of Light?Īnd that's exactly what Melisandre is planning at the time. until they turn him over to Melisandre for some gold hence, his reticence to trust them when he once again encounters them in season seven. He considers them the only family he's ever known. Hot Pie takes up work at the Inn at the Crossroads, while Gendry works as a smithy for the Brotherhood. When Arya, Hot Pie, and Gendry eventually escape Harrenhal, they are captured by the Brotherhood Without Banners. Arya, Gendry, and Hot Pie escape death and are put to work at Harrenhal at the command of Tywin Lannister. The Gold Cloaks (King's Landing city watch) pursue Gendry and attack their group, but Arya manages to protect him, claiming another dead boy was actually Gendry and that since he was dead, the Gold Cloaks's business is finished. Gendry befriends Arya, defending her and Hot Pie against the bullies in the group. Gendry decides to join the Night's Watch and is part of Yoren's party of recruits which includes Arya Stark. When smithy Tobho Mott, whom Gendry works for, sees the writing on the wall that Gendry's days are surely numbered after Ned's beheading, he sends the boy away. In the first season of Game of Thrones, Ned Stark finds out his late friend Jon Arryn was tracking down King Robert Baratheon's bastards after discovering the true parentage of Robert's three children with Cersei Lannister (read: realizing that Cersei's twin Jaime was actually their father) and that the Lannisters were killing off any Baratheon bastards who might usurp Joffrey's claim to the throne. But we always suspected he'd return eventually, because he sort of has a claim to the Iron Throne - also because he's kind of awesome. A familiar face came back into play during season seven of Game of Thrones in the form of Gendry, one of King Robert Baratheon's illegitimate sons who hadn't been seen on the show since the finale of season three. Her poems about Eros, however, speak with equal force to men as well as to women. Because social norms in ancient Greece differed from those of today and because so little is actually known of her life, it is difficult to unequivocally answer such claims. Her reputation for licentiousness would cause Pope Gregory to burn her work in 1073. This characterization held fast, so much so that the very term “lesbian” is derived from the name of her home island. Three centuries after her death the writers of the New Comedy parodied Sappho as both overly promiscuous and lesbian. In 1914, in Egypt, archeologists discovered papier-mâché coffins made from scraps of paper that contained more verse fragments attributed to Sappho. In 1898, scholars unearthed papyri that contained fragments of her poems. Merely one twenty-eight-line poem of hers has survived intact, and she was known principally through quotations found in the works of other authors until the nineteenth century. Her poems were first collected into nine volumes around the third century BC, but her work was lost almost entirely for many years. It is unclear whether she invented or simply refined the meter of her day, but today it is known as “Sapphic” meter. She was known in antiquity as a great poet: Plato called her “the tenth Muse” and her likeness appeared on coins. The history of her poems is as speculative as that of her biography. Other historians posit that she died of old age around 550 BC. A legend from Ovid suggests that she threw herself from a cliff when her heart was broken by Phaon, a young sailor, and died at an early age. Sappho’s school devoted itself to the cult of Aphrodite and Eros, and Sappho earned great prominence as a dedicated teacher and poet. She spent most of her adult life in the city of Mytilene on Lesbos where she ran an academy for unmarried young women. Evidence suggests that she had several brothers, married a wealthy man named Cercylas, and had a daughter named Cleis. She was born around 615 BC to an aristocratic family on the Greek island of Lesbos. Only a handful of details are known about the life of Sappho. It even supports Android TV! I have substituted a children’s book about Saints in the Bible reading time to give some sense of church history as well as cultural awareness (I’m enjoying reading the stories of saints whose names I’ve heard all my life – especially in names of places!) History: In Review I am planning on adding it back in to Together Time or possibly Sunday Vespers when they are both a little older. I felt it was better to put it off for later. I started using it with M but did not get all the way through the year. I have decided not to use Trial and Triumph this year. Click the image for my word document file. We both love to talk about things we remember and he enjoys hearing me tell stories about things he doesn’t remember. He looks forward to Wednesdays when we do the timeline. Though as we’ve gotten closer to the current year he sometimes requests a specific picture that he remembers. In my weekly planning I go through my photos from the that year and print out a variety of pictures for him to choose from and have those ready for him to cut out and paste into the timeline. For each year of his life, he picks three pictures and writes a short description (which he usually talks me in to counting as copy work). I have modified her timeline template a little and print a page for every year and tape it together to make a folding book. I am using an idea from Lesley Manning at fromthecmtrenches. Once a week we work on Em’s personal timeline. I will probably substitute the D’Aulaire Leif the Lucky book. There are too many edits in the portrayals of Native Americans that I would have to make to feel comfortable reading this one. I am making a substitution for the third term reading of D’Aulaire’s Buffalo Bill. We are using the regularly scheduled readings and enjoying them. Even with these breaks, we finished Mark early, so we started reading Luke. Matthew Passion by Bach (I will be putting together a listening guide and posting it on the Other Guide’s page). We also took a break during lent to go read through Matthew 26 and 27 and listen to The St. We took a break during December to go through Handel’s Messiah using Hallelujah: Cultivating Advent Traditions with Handel’s Messiah by Cindy Rollins. Bible: In ReviewĪs planned, we went through the book of Mark. I alternate the memory verse and catechism question every day after our opening prayer. Each new question leads us to discussions of what we believe for a little theology lesson. We use the New City Catechism for the catechism questions. and alternate with shorter “important” verses like John 3:16. For the Bible verses I choose longer passages such as Psalm 100, Psalm 24, I Corinthians 13 etc. This includes two things: A Bible verse and a catechism question. For example, this year we are talking about how the Bible is organized and are starting to memorize the books of the Old Testament.Įvery morning we also work on our Bible memory. On Thursday I add in a reading from the Stories of Saints and on Friday we have a general Bible lesson. Since this would not take us all year if we read a passage every day, I read from the Bible Mondays – Wednesdays. Instead of using the scheduled selected readings, I’m reading through the entire book a passage at a time. This year the New Testament readings are from Mark. I have made bookmarks for the Old Testament readings for each AO Year. I read the New Testament readings in the morning and include the Old Testament readings in our Vespers time in the evening. I include Bible in Together Time so I only use the schedule for M (since that’s who we started with and Em was listening along anyway). Ambleside Online provides a schedule for each year that breaks the readings down for each week. Animation artist Max Fleischer introduced a series of sing-along short cartoons called Screen Songs, which invited audiences to sing along to popular songs by "following the bouncing ball", which is similar to a modern karaoke machine. Vitaphone shorts (produced by Warner Bros.) featured many bands, vocalists, and dancers. With the arrival of " talkies" many musical short films were produced. This would become a popular form of entertainment known as the illustrated song, the first step toward music video. Using a magic lantern, Thomas projected a series of still images on a screen simultaneous to live performances. Marks and Joe Stern hired electrician George Thomas and various artists to promote sales of their song " The Little Lost Child". In 1894, sheet music publishers Edward B. History and development Development of the music video Other music videos may not have any concept, being only a filmed version of the song's live concert performance. Many music videos interpret images and scenes from the song's lyrics, while others take a more thematic approach. Combining these styles and techniques has become more popular due to the variety for the audience. Music videos use a wide range of styles and contemporary video-making techniques, including animation, live-action, documentary, and non-narrative approaches such as abstract film. While musical short films were popular as soon as recorded sound was introduced to theatrical film screenings in the 1920s, the music video rose to prominence in the 1980s when Paramount Global's MTV based its format around the medium. The format has been described by various terms including " illustrated song", "filmed insert", "promotional (promo) film", "promotional clip", "promotional video", "song video", "song clip", "film clip", "video clip", or simply "video". They can be commercially issued on home video, either as video albums or video singles. These videos are typically shown on music television and on streaming video sites like YouTube, or more rarely shown theatrically. Modern music videos are primarily made and used as a music marketing device intended to promote the sale of music recordings. Commercial video featuring a performance of a songĪ music video, sometimes abbreviated to MV or M/V, is a video that integrates a song or an album with imagery that is produced for promotional or musical artistic purposes. Then one day, he turned to me, and I still remember this, and he said, “What if the Ghostbusters were university professors?” Ivan didn't want to blow it off, because he thought there was something there. But it did have the concept of Ghostbusting, and it did have the marshmallow man. They were kind of blue-collar guys and half of it took place in another dimension. It was set in the future and there were lots of Ghostbusters. We loved the idea of it, but the film seemed impossible to make. We loved the name Ghostbusters, which we didn't own. Joe Medjuck associate producer: We loved the idea. I just thought, "Let's do a comedy ghost movie, but let's base it on the real research." From that, I wrote a script, which is much darker than what was seen and was less accessible. I took that from my family history, my family business, and married it with the ghost comedies of the 1930s-Abbot and Costello, Bing Crosby and Bob Hope, and the Bowery Boys. Rhine and Roll and the Maimonides Dream Lab-real scientists who were into this. I originated Ghostbusters based upon reading that material and the real work of J.B. It's about mediumship and transmediumship and the afterlife and survival of the consciousness after death, so that was the kind of stuff I was reading as a kid. My great grandfather was an Edwardian spiritualist. But anyway, it was my family business, the paranormal. Now, superstring theory-23 different dimensions, 11 different dimensions, what's in the 7th or 8th? We live in four. He sent it to me and said, ‘Look, do you think this would be something you'd like to direct with me and Bill?’ I read it, and it was sort of a futuristic thing and it was competing groups of Ghostbusters and out in space.ĭan Aykroyd co-writer, "Ray Stantz": It never went to outer space. Then Belushi passed away and the script sort of sat dormant for a couple of years. Dan had written a treatment for something called Ghostbusters for himself and John Belushi. Ivan Reitman director/producer: I was always a big horror and science fiction fan-as much as a comedy fan-and I had always had this dream of doing a movie that successfully combined both, comedy and scary stuff. All four of the core creatives-Aykroyd, Reitman, Murray, and Ramis-would go on to better, if not bigger, things, but Ghostbusters remains the moment when their brand of humor and our culture crossed streams, and invited all of Hollywood to the other side. Ghostbusters wasn't as massive as Star Wars at the box office, perhaps, but it represented something just as seismic by validating the new craft of comedy that had been knocking for nearly a decade. "Rarely has a movie this expensive provided so many quotable lines." "This movie is an exception to the general rule that big special effects can wreck a comedy," wrote Roger Ebert. But whereas Stripes and the Harold Ramis-directed Vacation appealed to the red-eyed college-kid demographic, Ghostbusters surprised everyone, including its creators, when virtually everyone, kids and grandmoms, began singing its theme song. Stay Puft? Terror dogs?-that seemed like the inhabitants of an epic ’shroom trip. In fact, they went even further, with a B-movie plot that was both ludicrous and stuffed with images-Mr. When Columbia gave Ghostbusters a green light, though, they handed the keys to the kingdom to an irreverent creative dream team that refused to flinch or be reined in by a bigger budget. Still, those hits were safe bets: raucous thumb-nosing comedies that mostly consisted of slobs outrunning or outsmarting Nixonian snobs. Saturday Night Live had yet to celebrate its 10th anniversary, but the seeds of SNL and Second City sketch comedy had already begun to bear fruit in Hollywood, with movies like Animal House, Caddyshack, and The Blues Brothers scoring at the box office. Dan Aykroyd was just 31 and director Ivan Reitman was 37. In June 1984, when the film opened in theaters, Bill Murray was only 33 years old. Ghostbusters has been such a huge part of our popular-culture for the last 30 years that it's easy to overlook what it represented at the time. You can add virtually anything to chicken broccoli and rice casserole. All you need is chicken broth, flour and seasonings to make the sauce so you can skip the canned soups forever.
